My name is Brandon and, since my diagnosis with type 1 diabetes in 2011, I’ve faced many of the challenges that come with it. On November 2, 2014, I’ll face one more. I’ll be running my first organized half marathon. The race will take me through the streets of San Francisco, over the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin County, then back over the bridge to the finishing point in San Francisco.
In my rehearsal 13 mile run eight weeks ago, I faced a bout of hypoglycemia during mile five. I don’t expect this run to be perfect, but I do expect to learn from it. During the race, I’ll be wearing my Nightscout rig (Dexcom CGM + Android phone), as well as my Pebble smart watch, which will keep me up to date on my BG. In the spirit of learning together, I’ll be broadcasting my blood glucose in real-time throughout the run.
I invite you to follow along and tweet to me @pancreasingame. Your tweets will appear alongside my BG data on my Pebble watch.
We are at a turning point in the empowerment of the diabetes community. Data is becoming more accessible, enabling us to engage with our health in promising new ways. Please keep the momentum going by supporting me in this race. Donate to one of two causes dear to my heart, and to my life: Tidepool or NightScout.
