Karmel Allison

Karmel Allison was born in Southern California, diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of nine, and educated at UC Berkeley. Karmel now lives in San Diego with her husband, where she is loving the sunshine, working in computational biology at the University of California, San Diego, and learning to use the active voice when talking about her diabetes.

In addition to her work in computational biology, which she presented at the first D-Data Exchange event in 2013, Karmel is well known among the diabetes community for her blog Where is My Robot Pancreas, which is featured on the diabetes blog A Sweet Life.  She is well known beyond the diabetes community for her moment in the spotlight as the “fainting diabetes patient” who stood behind President Obama during his press conference on the Affordable Care Act on October 21, 2013.
